How to get State Certified As An Airbrush Tanning Technician
There are a few places on the Internet that write about how to get state certified as an Airbrush Tanning Technician. The truth is, as of January 1, 2013, there is no state recognized program or test that you need to take. I’ve tried to write to those websites a few times with no response cause I feel that they might confuse people about that. Not even beauty school offer a testing program on Airbrush Tanning. Now of course this can change anytime so I would always recommend for you to check with your own states State Board of Cosmetology, The FDA and also the Health Department to make sure that there are no new regulations. There are however state certification requirements for indoor tanning but this is meant for salons with tanning beds.
As of today, in most states there are no tests or state regulated programs for Airbrush Tanning Technicians. The only state where you need to be licensed is Oregon. Oregon requires that you need to be a licensed esthetician in order to do Airbrush Tanning but in all other states you don’t. The Oregon Health Licensing Agency is also working on getting this field regulated.
Now there are FDA recommendations in Airbrush Tanning but I also wanted to clarify that the FDA does not necessarily approve of the Airbrush Tanning booth or Airbrush Tanning with a spray gun. They have however approved of the ingredient DHA to be used for cosmetic purposes and for external body parts. This is why Sun Tanning Lotions are allowed because they all have the DHA in them. It will be interesting to see how this will change over the years. Personally I feel that the Health Department should probably oversee the health and safety of consumers and technicians so I am looking forward to observe how this will change over the years.
